Resurgence
Could 2009 be the year of the re-issue? February saw the ever elusive Davy Graham LP Folk, Blues and Beyond beautifully re-pressed in a far too limited quantity (Stamford Audio UK), and more recently the killer Blossom Dearie track I Like London In The Rain, released on 45 from dubious sources. But I’m sure we can leave the crown on the heads of the never-ceasing-to-please label Light In The Attic Records, with their immense re-issue of Serge Gainsbourg’s LP - Histoire De Melody Nelson
Although available on re-issue in Europe for a while now, and not necessarily the Holy Grail of the Gainsbourg back cat, Light In The Attic’s US release of Histoire De Melody Nelson is amongst the most beautiful. So much celebrity-gossip has already been written about the great man: from his constant dragging on Gualoise, to his penchant for stunning women, yet the mere mention of a banjo-break, harpsichord middle eight or French-funk groove is left to the crate diggers to discuss in tight circles, hoping they’ve discovered the same five seconds of lost wax first.
Perfection is something to be avoided in music, leave that to the computer, yet I can’t wish for a more comforting sound than the hollow-woodiness of the bass, the grooviest rhythm section, the darkest guitar riffs, the seduction of the vocals on these recordings – perfection to me, yet wonderfully wrong... Perfect!
Perfection should be used when describing the packaging. It doesn’t get any better, any more detailed, and more passionate than LITA’s design department. The limited 180g vinyl version housed in the heaviest weight tip-on gatefold jacket, quality only seen before in recent years keeping our Free Design wax safe from harm.
