Selectadisc 1966 – 2009
Saturday the 28th of March saw the beginning of British summertime 2009, and in its wake, left behind not only winter, but an institution. Trading since 1966, the much loved independent record store Selectadisc closed its shutters for the last time.
‘The Shop’, as it became colloquially known to its staff and friends, was sadly finally beaten by the multitude of negative factors facing the current music retail business, factors which are especially affecting the independents. Based in the centre of Nottingham (although a brief stint was tried on London’s Berwick St - as ‘immortalised’ on the Oasis album cover ‘Morning Glory’), Selectadisc proudly served the city and its visitors since 1966. A true record shop – with knowledgeable and caring staff; a huge catalogue catering for all genres; and above all a shop with a heart. The only vinyl revolution known to Selectadisc was either 33 or 45: a whole floor solely for vinyl always existed, an eternal commitment for keeping this format as a viable commodity, which was above the call of duty. The internet is obviously a useful tool which more and more of us will/are turning towards for our listening pleasure. Yet nothing can replace the hands on approach of fingering racks of records with strange names, mystical artwork - a 'chance buy' which may lead to a whole new world of spiritual enlightenment. Goodbye Selectadisc – and thanks so much for turning myself and countless of others on to some very special music. Maybe the last word which sums up the current state should be left to long-standing manager Jim Cooke, in his recent interview in The Guardian: "I had two kids, two weeks ago, come into me", says Cooke. "They were doing a business studies course at the local university. One of them said, 'Why is your shop geared to classic rock like Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull?' I said, 'When did you last buy a CD?' And he said, 'Six years ago.' So I said, 'Well, there's your fucking answer, mate.'"
